Double Take: Almond Flour Chocolate Chip Cookies

almond-flour-chocolate-chip-cookies

One of my most popular recipes on this site is the almond flour chocolate chip cookies. I never understood why it was so popular; sure, it’s a good recipe. But it didn’t get too much attention when I posted it and the pictures weren’t that great. It all made sense one day when I realized it was the #1 google search result for “almond flour cookies” and “almond flour chocolate chip cookies”. Well I felt humbled.

Ever since I found that out, I’ve been wanting to make these again and take better photos. I mean, if people I don’t know are visiting this website, it’s good to make the best first impression you can, right?

It also so happens that this week was one of my good friend’s birthday, and homemade baked goods sounded like a great gift from someone whose home is 2000 miles away from campus. So cookies it was, with about twice as many chocolate chips as the recipe calls for because who wouldn’t love that for their birthday?

A funny thing happened when I made these this time around: They didn’t spread out nearly as much as I expected, making more of a doughball than a cookie. The taste and texture was nearly the same cooked either way: Crispy on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside. As long as they taste good, I don’t mind so much how they came out.

And then I held on to them just long enough to get these photographs + more before I gift wrapped them and handed them off to the birthday girl. If you want to see more photographs and the recipe, click over to the original recipe page. These make great birthday cookies or just anytime cookies. Of course they’re gluten-free, and also fairly low in sugar for a cookie(since almond flour is naturally sweet) and grain-free, too.

I was going to say how similar they looked to dough balls and then you said it! I’ve got no reason to do the gluten free thing and usually avoid baking things that way just b/c I don’t have to but these look pretty darn amazing!

Haha, that’s really cool! I follow a couple paleo blogs just to see how they come up with desserts. Always sound better than “traditional” recipes.

I haven’t baked with almond flour in so long! I wonder sometimes if I eat too much almond between almond milk and almond butter and am going to be on almond overload 😉 But your right – it does lend a naturally sweet, nutty taste. These look a little too ‘hard’ on the outside, and I prefer a soft cookie, but I’ll give them a go!

Are you mostly motivated by page hits and views on your blog? You seem to mention it quite a few times. Not that there’s anything wrong with it, just curious.

My husband’s favorite sweet treat is the classic chocolate chip cookie. I tried this recipe out on him to see if it would pass the cookie test and it was a huge success! We both prefer these to the usual Nestle cookie recipe. I’ve made them twice now in the last two weeks. Have you ever tried using Agave with these instead of sugar? I’m just curious if they would hold up. Thank you for sharing!

    These are GREAT!

I tried a variation, by using only 1 cup of almond flour, with 1/2 cup of rolled oats.

I also did not use any sugar at all–these are soooo good. Thanks for the super recipe!

We are an entire family trying to be gluten, sugar & soy free for many reasons. We thought we would never be able to have cookies again, then I stumbled on this site. My kids and I just made these this morning. They are amazing!! 🙂 Next time we will try with Stevia.

I have friends who have gluten and dairy allergies, and I have tried doing gluten free baking before using rice flour and others things, and nothing turned out to my liking. These, however, are AMAZING. Almond flour is my new go-to gluten free! And, I made them dairy-free by subbing coconut oil for the butter-delicious! Thanks for sharing.

I’m trying to get off wheat and sugar, so I’ve been looking for a starter recipe using almond flour, this one turned out pretty well, despite a lot of substitutions — I used half chickpea flour, I added cocoa instead of chocolate chips, subbed earth balance for the fat and sweetened with a little coconut sugar and stevia. Still pretty delicious, so thanks – great recipe, really simple and flexible!

I adore making these cookies. They are simply and turn out fabulously every time. I have taken to adding some dried unsweetened coconut which makes them a bit lighter and is a lovely additional flavor. Have also added some flaxseed meal sometimes when trying to justify eating cookies by making them healthier! Thank you for the recipes!
